Customer vote productBULL DOG to the Bone! Compact Muscle Tone: KINDLE 3 Wi-Fi/3G
2010-09-03
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2X79L9BZO8YF0 In this video I wanted to track the history of KINDLE through the first 3 generations of the regular sized reader. I don't yet have a DX, so I can't show it. I don't have any desire for a Nook; for me as a professional writer it's a non entity... the limp noodle competition [though I was impressed with most of the reviews which made comparisons; they were appropriate, fair, helpful, and clear].

In this video I also wanted to focus somewhat on the internet browser. I'll add a few details here which I wasn't able to cover in the video:

I had extensively used the browser in my K2, and will continue that with the K3:

1. For quick Google searches for information related to what I'm reading or researching.

2. For posting regularly in a writing seminar discussion forum I opened a few years ago in the Amazon Shorts Community. [I use the keyboard extensively, and was pleased, actually surprised, that the condensation of that part of the Kindle from K2 to K3, with the #'s moving to the Symbol capacity, actually works better. Yes!]

3. For making quick orders on the Amazon site when I'm away from my laptop [my KINDLE is always with me, even when I change settings around the house], or for checking status of orders, or for researching products I'm working toward purchasing, like a new netbook.

4. More and more frequently I do browsing, of any type possible, on my Kindle instead of PC because of arthritis and other aging problems making use of a relatively heavy laptop awkward, sometimes painful, especially to move around and set up. Even prior to having these problems escalate, I had begun relying on my Kindle more for browsing, because it's so comfortable and efficient to work with.

I'm thankful that a reviewer mentioned that the previous Kindles use Sprint for 3G, whereas the new ones now use AT&T. That information helped me quite a lot to be prepared for this situation ahead of time.

That change in carrier would probably be a plus for anyone in the mainstream living areas of the globe. But for a person like me who lives and works in two rural areas on either side of the Continental Divide, Sprint and Verizon both give good coverage to less populated areas, whereas AT&T is still limited or non-existent away from crowded locales. I've been told by a cell industry expert that AT&T has made purchases which will expand its reach into my types of "wildernesses"... so I'm crossing stiff fingers!

Honestly, the K3 AT&T 3G works better than I thought it would [though at our work location I'm usually connected with 1 or 2 bars on the "EDGE" of 3G; coverage is usually better in our home location], and Wi-Fi spots are more prevalent in my rural settings than I had imagined. I'm enjoying finding those, with the Kindle automatically keeping hot on the trail of wi-fi availability whenever I'm online in a new location. [Also due to rural locations, for a couple years I've been successfully using Verizon's mobile broadband USB air card for all my Internet access. As far as I've been able to determine, that air card won't work for the Kindle.]

Now for the changes in the browser mode and style from K2 to K3:

1. The style has become more sophisticated and fun in the K3, but will take some work with it to discover how to streamline the "moves" for my habitual uses. Even on the "EDGE" of 3G the pages load in fairly quickly, actually more so than the K2 did with the Basic Mode [Advanced Mode took even longer but I was content with it].

2. The new mode and style is in some ways difficult to set up for reading, because for my old Bi-focal aided eyes [could use new glasses as well as new vision] I can't read small print, except in bed with no glasses on when I can hold the Kindle a few inches from eyeballs. Yes, the new mode has easy, fun ways to magnify the print, and to navigate, but I'm still finding what ways will work for me to settle into reading something of any length, without having to use the cursor to expand the edges of the lines to catch words just out of view. The "Article" mode helps quite a lot, as do the several ways of zooming in and out. I'm sure I'll be able to work with this and am very much enjoying the tweaking process.

3. As other reviewers have indicated, some Kindle users might not be as interested in working with the browser, especially if they have other devices designed more specifically for that, which, of course, they have to pay monthly fees for... that's another reason I appreciate whatever the Kindle can give me with the amazing gift of free Internet access for browsing, searching, and purchasing on Amazon beyond the Kindle store.

Overall, I've fallen in love with each of the 3 Kindles [will probably do so also with the DX one of these days when I can purchase one] and have been able to feel fortunate for each of the upgrades improvements, all of which have worked better for me than predecessors.

I feel that for the price, no monthly fees, and the still relatively low cost of books with many available free, the KINDLES are GIFTS to adults who love to read and grow their minds and horizons through that activity.

As with the previous transitions, all improvements from K2 to K3 are potent, logical, and natural... and were obviously designed with USERS (no one else) in mind...

LOVE my new, compact, little black bull dog!

Customer vote productGood but not GREAT
2010-09-03
The way I look at this, NOTHING is going to be perfect for any device we buy.

I love the convenience of the built in light, and I think the cover does a great job protecting the Kindle.

Yes, it adds a LOT of weight to what is supposed to be a lighter device. And at first, that bothered me. However, I realized I was not really reading that much at night, so I removed it and used a softer cover I had for every day use. BINGO, we have a winner.

If you read in bed, I'd suggest adding this to the Kindle at night...it's very easy to remove and will not damage the Kindle. This way, during the day (I do work and travel a lot so only read in the evenings), you can have this really lightweight and attractive device and in the evenings, the light you want.

I did notice of course that there seems to be unevenness of the lighting.

NO, REALLY? LOL...I mean, take out any light that you've purchased that clips on and tell me you get PERFECT even lighting!! IF you say you do, I'd like to know the brand, because I have TWO lights, and both do a good job, just not perfect and it's uneven.

I did read a review where someone returned the cover and got a new one and felt it was better, so maybe that's an option, but to be honest, I live in REALITY and understand nothing is going to be 100% perfect. It does the job and does it very well.

I would give it 5 stars if not for the weight, but overall, I'm happy with it. It's an innovative product that's convenient and you have to pay for that convenience.

Customer vote productCheap, quick shipping, bad screen flicker
2010-09-03
Good: The cable was very inexpensive, shipping was fast

Bad: Cable caused terrible screen flicker and aliasing on two different LCD TVs (Toshiba 42" Regza 1080P and Sharp 42") from 480P (Panasonic DVD player), 720P/1080i (Motorola cable box) and 1080P (Xbox 360 Elite and Samsung Blue-Ray player) sources.

I don't recommend that purchase this product, spend a couple more bucks and get this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00356K6U0/ref=pd_rate_rs

I dont like to flame a product, but I was very disappointed with this HDMI cable (even for $3)

I don't know if I would consider myself a "Power Home Theater user" but I know that wasting $100 on an HDMI cable is not going to turn your HDTV into a 3D movie theater!

That said, these HDMI cables are the best value for the money, I'm watching Blu-ray and streaming from my computer in FULL HD. Picture and sound are great. I'm a happy man!
